# Discovery analysis reference

[GOV.UK research analysis guidance](https://www.gov.uk/service-manual/user-research/analyse-a-research-session)
is a useful foundation for moving from observations to themes and actions. Use the
team's research question and methods when supplied; a method is not validation of
the actual findings.

Anchor the narrative in specific episodes, behavior, constraints and quotations.
Identify the sample and recruitment limits. Separate what was observed from what
was recalled, and both from inferred motivation. Keep negative and contradictory
cases visible. Interest in a prototype does not establish budget or willingness to pay.

A useful experiment names the uncertain assumption, the task or prototype that
could test it, what evidence would change the decision and the remaining limits.
Do not manufacture statistically meaningful conclusions from a small convenience sample.
